Attending an open mat at a new gym can be intimidating. Understanding the unwritten rules will help you make a good impression and get the most out of your training.
Before You Arrive
Research the Gym
Check their website or call ahead:
- Is there a mat fee?
- What training types are offered (gi, no-gi, both)?
- What time does it start and end?
- Are there any specific rules?
What to Bring
- Clean gi (for gi sessions) or rashguard and shorts (for no-gi)
- Sandals or flip-flops for off the mat

When You Arrive
